Early prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through awareness-raising targeting women of child-bearing age;
Facilitating the treatment of HIV-positive pregnant women;
Providing substitute foods to newborn babies of HIV-positive mothers.
Activities
Organize awareness raising sessions for women’s associations and cooperatives, high schools and colleges, young girls and couples.
In each country, open a centre for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission in 2 health districts, coupled with family planning services.
Facilitate the putting in place of programmes to reduce women’s vulnerability in the face of AIDS.
Mobilize resources for the low-cost acquisition of antiretroviral drugs by HIV-positive mothers and children.
Organise fund-raising activities to provide foods that substitute mother’s milk.
Impact Indicators
Percentage of women who received counselling during their most recent pregnancy, and who accept to undergo a test and obtain their results, among all pregnant women in the years preceding the survey
Percentage of women who received selected pre-natal consultation, were HIV-positive in the previous year and, in order to prevent mother to child transmission, received a complete dose of antiretrovirlal drugs according to national prescriptions;
Percentage of women who gave birth during the period under consideration and who received counselling on baby feeding before they delivered.
